It’s Christmas Eve, you are surrounded by your family, one of them gifts you a new book. You sit down with a cup of hot cocoa or hot chocolate depending on where you are from and you cozy up with a blanket and you spend the rest of your evening curled up reading this story. Amazing right? So we are going to tell you all about Jolabokaflod.

What’s Jolabokaflod?

Well That’s exactly how Icelandic people celebrate Christmas each year. This tradition known as Jolabokaflod, which translates roughly to Christmas Book Flood. This is a tradition that I feel we should all try to incorporate in to our festive period and spend time with our family and children reading a new book together.

How did this tradition start?

This tradition of Jolabokaflod began during World War II, once Iceland had gained its independence for Denmark in 1944. Paper being one of the few commodities not rationed during the war. Icelanders shared their love of books even more as other types of gifts were short supply.

Ever since 1944, the Icelandic book trade has sent out a book bulletin to each household in the middle of November when the Reykjavik Book Fair happens. People use this catalogue to order books to give to their friends and family on Christmas Eve. After all the presents are open, everyone grabs a cup of hot chocolate and cozies up to spend the rest of the evening reading their books.
